Al Mahuka - Mr Hawaiian Islands

Dear Shaklee Members and Non Members-

On May 28, 2002, I was injured at work. I had injured my right knee and was sent to the ER. I had some x-rays done and the doctor said that I should see an orthopedic specialist because there was something wrong; my knee was 3-4 times its normal size. The orthopedic specialist had me take an x-ray & MRI, and found that I needed to have surgery on my knee. My (outer) meniscus was torn and flapping.

I was very concerned because I had entered one of the biggest body building contests in Hawaii. It was the Mr. Hawaiian Islands contest. I’ve been training so hard for this show and I refused to have surgery because it was only 5 ½ weeks until the contest and already I’ve been training for 6 months. So I called Kyle Chu at Bodymax Unlimited who also incorporates Shaklee’s Nutritional Supplements. Kyle told me to up my Shaklee vitamins. Instead of taking 25 tabs 3x a day, we increased it to 50 tabs 3x a day, and he also did the Nerve Therapy that he does at Bodymax on me. When I went back to the doctor, I asked if it was okay to lift and enter the contest. He told me it would be okay to lift with my upper body but not to do any weight training for my legs. I was upset to think that I was going to enter the contest and my legs were what I was weak in. It became decision time…to enter and possibly lose or to enter and prove that being natural and using alternative therapies can win.

So I decided to enter with only 3 ½ weeks of hard-core healing and hard-core upper body training plus hard-core dieting. In all, through this experience I also had a lot of negative feedback that I had no chance at all. I was even told from a professional bodybuilder and trainer that I shouldn’t enter at all. He said, “If you can’t go in 100%, don’t go in at all.” So I took all that negative as a challenge. Well the big day came and I did the show.
